Thanks for all your comments so far...

Bill - wanted to clarify a couple of my points in response to your comments:

The Economist is the one beautiful exception - it defies all the 'rules' touted by many as the secret to successful online journalism by charging for online content and having a broad brief. It's excellent content equalled by few others and targeting an affluent, highly-educated audience prepared to pay. I don't think this will translate to many Murdoch mastheads!

Agree many journalists are defined to bloat because most newspaper writers only make lip-service contributions to their websites apart from the 'shovelware' of newspaper content online. New media is just that - journalists telling their stories through audio, images, video & multimedia - not just 1500-word news & analysis pieces. It's time for journalists to become multi-platform media entrepreneurs, not just 'writers'.

I'd mark this as follows:

1. Yes, agree.
2. Yes, but successful paywalls will change this.
3. Don't agree. It can be profitable. For example think of cable news channels and The Economist - both manage to sell news with a side serving of advertising rather than the other way around.
4. Define bloat. Most journalists are already reduced to 'churnalism' theres not much room for cutting staff further and maintaining a real news agenda.
5. Yes, but only up to a point.
